Laser Acne Treatment Millions suffer from acne, which can be both physically, and emotionally scarring. Numerous treatments are available to treat this chronic problem. Most of these treatments offer only modest and temporary improvement. Many produce significant results but are associated with serious potential side effects, some of which can be life threatening or cause birth defects. Recently, the Aramis laser has been FDA cleared in the treatment of acne. Acne may be very mild (often called comedonal or black heads) or may be more severe and lead to scarring (often called inflammatory, pustule or cystic). Mild or comedonal acne is caused by sebum, the oil produced by the sebaceous glands of the skin, draining properly from the pores. This may be from overproduction sebum or clogged pores. The more severe acne is cause from the prior and also the presence of inflammation and bacteria. This can become so severe that it leads to scarring which can be permanent. The Aramis laser uses a patented wavelength of light that is ideal for the treatment of acne. The light energy is emitted in a pulsatile manner to “drive” the energy deep into the skin to the level of the sebaceous gland. This energy thermally alters the gland to reduce the size of the gland and the oil production. The laser energy also acts to reduce bacteria present in the pore. Through the use of the Aramis laser we are able to treat the important source of acne—the sebaceous gland. The treatment is very safe and effective, and can be performed on any skin type. There are essentially no side effects with the Aramis laser. The laser uses a cooling tip that protects and “numbs” the skin. Any discomfort has been described as a rubber band snap. The treatment takes approximately 1 hour for the face, but the neck, shoulders and back may also be treated. You will be able to return to normal activity immediately with any evidence of having a treatment. Typically, a series of 4 to 5 treatments is administered 10 to 14 days apart. Some clients may experience a 20% improvement after each treatment; others may not see significant improvement until after the 3rd treatment. Overall, an 80% improvement in acne is seen. Maintenance treatments are necessary every 5 to 6 months, but are usually only a single treatment. In rare circumstances, 2 treatments may be necessary. Because the Aramis laser also promotes collagen production, the pits created by acne can be targeted and significantly reduced. Your skin care regimen and laser follow up instructions will need to be followed to prevent complication and improve results. Consultations are required to determine if this treatment is appropriate for you. In many circumstances, treatments can be performed the same day (if this has been arranged when scheduling your appointment). If the treatment is desired the same day, you must have avoided sun exposure (significant) 1 week. You should then plan on staying out of the sun for 1 week after the treatment. A micro-dermabrasion and/or chemical peel may be recommended 5 to 7 days after your treatment to improve your results. This may be cover by your insurance!
