BOTOX®
Could millions of people be wrong? Not the millions that have tried BOTOX for the treatment of moderate to severe frown lines. While BOTOX is only indicated for the treatment of frown lines, it has become a standard treatment of crow’s feet, forehead lines, bunny nose, smoker lines as well as many other areas on the face and neck. Almost anyone 18 to 65 can be treated. BOTOX is used to improve dynamic lines and wrinkles (those wrinkles that are formed when muscles are contracted). It works by temporarily interrupting the connection between the nerve and muscle thereby causing the muscle to relax. This imparts an overall youthful appearance to the skin. The treatment consists of a series of a few small shots. There is a minimal discomfort and no down time involved. The procedure is very safe and effective. It can be performed in the office over your lunch break! You will return to work and no one will be able to tell. The effects are seen as early as 72 hours and reach their peak at 2 weeks. On average, the effects should last between 3-5 months. Your first treatment may last only 2-3 months but as treatments are continued, the results last longer. Repeat treatments may be done every 3-4 months and often require less BOTOX to achieve the same results. Consultations are required to determine if BOTOX is right for you. You should not have BOTOX if you have an active infection at the desired treatment site. Those with neuromuscular disorders such as multiple sclerosis, or bleeding disorders should not undergo treatment.
What to expect at your initial visit.
You will be asked to contract the facial muscles (frowning, squinting) that affect the area to be treated. This will help your surgeon determine the best location for the BOTOX injection. The BOTOX is injected directly into the muscle or just below the skin using a tiny needle. There is generally no recovery period. You can go directly back to your normal activities. You should stay upright for 4 hours, avoid strenuous activities and should not rub or massage the injection sites. The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery makes these suggestions: Ask questions and be informed about the benefits and risks involved with BOTOX injections. Choose a medical setting using sterile techniques. Necessary equipment should be available to respond to any potential problems.
