Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) Focal hyperhidrosis occurs as the result of the over-activity of the eccrine sweat glands of the affected areas. It can involve the palms, soles, axillae and rarely the face and trunk. Understandably, this may lead to social, professional and psychological problems. Often symptoms tend to be worse when one is emotionally stressed, involved in intimate social situations, public speaking, physically activity or when the body temperature increases. Many treatments are available for hyperhidrosis. These include antiperspirants such as Aluminum chloride hexahydrate (Drysol) which are often irritating to the skin and are largely ineffective for moderate to severe sweating. Oral medications may also be used. These are frequently limited by their undesired side effects. Tap Water Iontophoresis may give some relief; however, this can be very time consuming and needs to be performed daily or on a weekly basis. Surgical procedures can be used as a last alternative. These are associated with more severe complications, and up to 70% of patients may develop compensatory hyperhidrosis in a different area. BOTOX® (Botulinum toxin type A) provides a safe alternative to the treatment of excessive sweating. It has been FDA approved for the treatment of primary axillary hyperhidrosis. While mainly used to treat excessive sweating of the axillae, it may also be used to treat the palms and soles among other areas. It is administered just under the skin using tiny needles. The effects are seen as quickly as 48 hours, but maximum effect is not seen for 2 weeks. Studies have shown anywhere between 50% to 90% improvement in sweating which lasts an average of 6.7 months. BOTOX® is not a cure for hyperhidrosis. Symptoms will gradually return prompting the patient to return for their next treatment. Consultations are required to determine if BOTOX® is right for you. You should not have BOTOX® if you have an active infection at the desired treatment site. Those with neuromuscular disorders such as multiple sclerosis, or bleeding disorders should not undergo treatment. BOTOX® treatment for hyperhidrosis may be covered by your insurance.
