Are you tired of those unsightly leg veins? Do you have leg pain? Do your legs feel heavy or burn when walking? Do your legs swell? Your problem may be more than cosmetic. Yes, your insurance company should cover the treatment, but regardless you need to have your veins treated.
Varicose veins are larger veins under the skin that are distended. They often appear as bluish bumps beneath the skin. Because these veins are no longer functional, their treatment causes no problems. Spider veins are much smaller vessels visible within the skin. These appear as very small bluish or red vessels often running in “groups” in different patterns. They frequently appear on the thighs or lower legs, but may also appear on the face. No one knows exactly why these develop, but there seems to be multiple contributing factors. Among these are familial predisposition, pregnancy, hormones, trauma to the area and long periods of standing or sitting.
Sclerotherapy is considered the gold standard in the treatment of medium to large spider veins and some smaller varicose veins. It is a quick and safe treatment for your unwanted leg veins. Through a series of small injections both varicose and spider veins can be treated. The treatment consists of injecting a sclerosing solution directly into the vessel through a tiny needle. This damages the inside of the vessel causing it to blanch (turn white) and gradually disappear over several weeks. A typical treatment may last 30-60 minutes and involve multiple injections. It may take one to three treatments to obliterate the vessel for good, and some vessels may not respond at all. In most cases 40% to 70% of the vessels treated will be gone for good. However, new vessels may appear requiring future treatments.
